The animals here have come into our care for a variety of reasons. Some come to us from owners who recognize that they can no longer provide the care and attention that their companion requires. Some were unfortunately separated from their families and were lucky enough to make their way here for another chance at finding their owners or a new loving home. Others have been removed from unacceptable situations by members of our Investigations team.
If you see an animal you are interested in:
1. Talk to a staff member to see if there is any background information in the animal you are interested in. Sometimes we have knowledge regarding the medical history and/or behavioural history of a specific animal, other times our knowledge is limited to our experience with the animal after it came into our care. Dont be afraid to ask questions we are here to try and help you make an informed decision.
2. We strongly encourage you to spend time with the animal you are considering - bring in family members who will also have daily or regular contact with the animal you are considering.
3. You may also want to take the animal to your home for a day visit to see how it reacts with other pets or children. The day visit allows you to spend extra time with the animal you are considering making a lifetime commitment to and have a chance to observe it outside the shelter environment. An adoption application must be completed prior to taking an animal for a day visit.
Any animals being taken for a day visit must be returned to the shelter at least one-half hour before the shelter closes (4:30pm weekdays; 3:30pm on weekends). No overnight visits are permitted.
4. If you have decided on a companion - complete the adoption application form. There are no same day adoptions. Applications must be reviewed and references checked. This process normally takes 1 to 3 days to complete.
5. Once you have been approved the animal may need to be spayed/neutered if this procedure has not already been completed. How long this takes is dependant on when we can get it booked at one of the veterinary clinics.
This shouldnt be an impulse decision!
The companion animal you chose will probably be with you for 10 to 20 years. The more planning and research that is done the more likely you and your pet will be happy and comfortable with your decision and with one another!
Remember a Pet is for Life!!!
We reserve the right to refuse adoptions.
This is first and foremost an animal shelter and our adoption process has been developed in an attempt to ensure that all adoptions are permanent and the animals leaving our shelter are being placed into loving, caring forever homes.
Therefore, adoptions are not decided specifically on a first come first serve basis but on a best fit basis. Our staff and volunteers will try their very best to work with you in your quest for a suited to you companion animal and inform you of any general or specific needs of the companion you are interested in. We are committed to doing all we can to ensure successful adoptions.
